Petroleum storage: what to confirm before committing

A practical look at product suitability, proposed capacity and the scope of a third-party storage arrangement.

All insights

Product suitability comes first

Storage requirements depend on the product and its specifications. Confirm with the relevant operator whether the proposed tanks and handling systems are suitable for the cargo, including any segregation or temperature requirements.

Do not treat a general statement of terminal capacity as confirmation that suitable space is available for a specific product or period.

Review the full storage scope

Clarify the quantity, storage period, proposed receipt and delivery arrangements, and the services included. Establish whether handling, inspection, sampling or other activities are separate from the storage charge.

Check the measurement basis and any assumptions used in an estimate. A rate expressed per tonne cannot be compared directly with a rate per barrel without an agreed conversion basis.

Verify before proceeding

Confirm the identity of the operator and counterparties, the applicable documentation and each party's responsibilities. Availability and proposed terms remain subject to verification, due diligence and contractual agreement.
